Exterior Reconstruction - Sidewalks, Flower Beds, Railings, and Terraces

Sidewalks
Sidewalks help connect important points around the house. Most likely, you already have a sidewalk from the main entrance to the gate or entrance gate. Another option is to connect the path from the entrance to the garage or create a connecting path in the garden.
Choose from the following materials: ceramics, bricks, cast concrete, stone, and wood.
The harder the material you choose, the easier it will be to maintain.
Types of Pavement
Ceramics
A durable material that lasts for many years and is suitable for universal use. There are many decor options to choose from. It is easy to replace a broken tile with a new one. Ideal as pavement around a pool, on a terrace, or in a garden.
Bricks
Ideal for outdoor use. It can be used to pave a terrace, sidewalks, or a driveway to the garage. There are different types of brick pavement, such as "Klinker," which is made from natural materials and fired at high temperatures. There are many color variations. The installation is not demanding; it requires a firm base on which the bricks are laid.
Cast Concrete
The long lifespan of this material is its undeniable advantage. It is strong, resistant to heavy loads, and non-slip. It can be installed as a whole surface or in the form of tiles. There are many shapes and surfaces to choose from. It is also more affordable.
Stone
You can choose between natural or artificial stone, such as sandstone, slate, shale, limestone, and others. It stands out with its interesting structure, but its acquisition cost is higher. Stones are available with fine or coarse surfaces, depending on your preference. Each stone has different hardness and durability, so consider its use carefully.
Wood
Sidewalks made of round wooden logs are more suitable for natural parks. Wood has low durability. In damp conditions, it begins to decay. Therefore, a foil is placed underneath to prevent this as much as possible. Wood excellently dampens noise and is easy to install. The price is higher.
Flower Beds and Their Edging
To separate flower beds from the surrounding garden, it is necessary to edge them. This prevents weeds from growing in various places, saving you the constant effort of weeding and endless work.
Types of Flower Bed Edging
Palisades
They can separate flower beds as well as driveways or sidewalks. They have higher acquisition costs, but prices differ depending on the material used. They come in square, rectangular, or circular shapes.
Curbstone
It resembles a classic curbstone on a city sidewalk. There are many materials to choose from: bricks, plastic, stone, or concrete. It separates flower beds or lawns and is used for driveways. It effectively prevents weeds from growing into the flower bed.
Gravel Mound
Separating flower beds using gravel or pebbles.
Round Logs
A flower bed is separated from the lawn, terrace, or sidewalk using wooden round logs. This prevents weed growth. However, the lifespan of wood is lower, and it quickly rots without maintenance.
Invisible Edging
An economical option. The edging is made of plastic and is hidden in the ground. It separates the lawn, flower beds, or pavement. Its application is very simple and can be easily done by a handyman.

Railings
For outdoor railings, stainless steel profiles are most commonly used, either square or round, and with various surface finishes: polished, glossy, brushed. They can be complemented with other materials such as wood or glass.
Wood: stained or natural
Glass: frosted, clear, colored, etc.
Balcony railings are most commonly made of stainless steel, which is ideal for outdoor use due to its properties. Another option is galvanized profile, which can withstand any weather and has a longer lifespan. There is also the choice of aluminum, which requires low maintenance, and wood, which needs regular care.
Terraces
During the summer months, it is advantageous to have a connection between the interior and exterior, which also increases your living space. It is practical in many ways. You can serve meals directly from the kitchen to the terrace and enjoy fresh air. The terrace is always connected to the house, so it is better to have it covered or at least provide shade.
Where and what material to use for building it?
The placement of the terrace is important, considering which direction it will face. The sun is most intense on the southern side, while the northern side receives the least sunlight. On the eastern side, you can enjoy the sun mainly in the morning and noon, while in the afternoon, the sun is predominantly on the western side until late evening, but with reduced intensity. The best option seems to be having the terrace on the west or southwest side, where you can have sufficient sun but at a milder intensity.
Flooring Materials
Wood is commonly chosen today for its aesthetic appeal, although it requires high maintenance. Stone stands out for its durability, and WPC (Wood-Plastic Composite) is popular for its resistance. There are other options available, including tiles and concrete.
Wood
Requires high maintenance but is an environmentally friendly option. Pine and spruce are commonly used. The lifespan is around 10 years. Regular care and maintenance are necessary.
Stone
A durable material with a long lifespan. Options include limestone, granite, marble, quartzite, and others. It is a more expensive choice but can last for years.
WPC (Wood-Plastic Composite)
A material that should contain 60% wood and 40% HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene). Its durability and good properties, even in winter and rain, guarantee year-round use of the terrace. It will not become slippery or freeze. The lifespan is approximately 50 years.
Tiles
Cheaper than stone flooring. Choose a high-quality floor suitable for outdoor use. It is important that it can withstand freezing temperatures without cracking. Opt for a rough surface to prevent slipping in rainy weather. It is resistant, durable, and available in various patterns and textures.
Concrete
Offers many decorative options and colors. It can be designed to resemble wood. It is highly durable and stable, with initial costs that are not too high.
