Although the architecture of the house is reminiscent of the Brussels style of the Czechoslovak exposition at EXPO 58, its aesthetics no longer convince many people today. The old original construction from the 1970s also suggests that it's time for a refresh. Therefore, many owners of Šumperák houses consider how to modernize their homes during the renovation. Below, you can see the outcome of the Šumperák renovation in Slovakia, which we carried out in 2019.
A Legend Named Šumperák
You have probably come across a single-story family house with a flat roof in some Czech (or Slovak) villages. The house is characterized by slanted surfaces with circular windows on both sides of the balcony. The slanted motif can also be seen on the garage doors.
Where did the name of the house come from? The designer Josef Vaněk was inspired by a similar house in the 1960s. He took photographs of the architectural plans and designed the house for the then director of the hospital in Šumperk.
The house gained popularity primarily due to its simplicity. According to Vaněk, the construction had to be so straightforward that it could be built by three people in two months.
Šumperák experienced its boom in the 1960s and 1970s. Eventually, around 20,000 of these family houses were built in the former Czechoslovakia.
